Zachtjes klopte ik op Susie's deur. Die was al gedeeltelijk open. Toen ik klopte, duwde de deur verder naar binnen. Susie lag te rusten in bed. Nicholas stond naast het bed en sprak met haar. Ik had de dokter net zien vertrekken voordat ik klopte.

Susie zag me en zwaaide me dichterbij. Toen ik haar aanwijzingen volgde, zag ik dat ze zichtbaar overstuur was. Haar gezicht was rood en vlekkerig. Er zaten tranen op haar wangen. Ze huilde nog steeds.

"Ik zal nog eens met de dokter praten," zei Nicholas, en na een snelle bezorgde blik op mij snelde hij achter de dokter aan. In dat tempo zou hij haar in de gang betrappen.
